How to stop credit card offers in the mail

Most card offers are prescreened from credit-bureau lists. One free request stops them from every issuer at once.

The 5-minute fix

  1. Go to OptOutPrescreen.com, the credit bureaus’ official site.
  2. Opt out online for five years, or sign and mail their form to make it permanent.
  3. Allow a few weeks for offers already printed.

What it won’t stop

  • Offers from a bank you already use. Change marketing preferences in your account, or follow the opt-out steps in its privacy notice.
  • Companies that don’t use credit-bureau lists. DMAchoice can reduce these.
  • Offers for someone who doesn’t live with you. Different fix →
Capital One, Chase, Citi, Amex and Discover

Not a customer: OptOutPrescreen covers all five. Already a customer: use your account settings or the issuer’s privacy notice. We found no online form any of them offers non-customers; the direct routes are by phone, which we don’t list.

Should you stop them all?

Probably not everything. Mail from your own bank can include things you need, and some of it looks like an offer when it isn’t. Stop the prescreened offers first, then decide bank by bank.
