Yes. OptOutPrescreen.com is the official site for stopping prescreened credit card and insurance offers. It’s run by the major credit bureaus, and the FTC sends people to it.
The quick answer
- Type the address yourself: optoutprescreen.com. Skip links in emails or ads that offer to opt you out.
- Pick five years, done entirely online, or permanent: start online, then sign and mail back the form they send you.
- Your Social Security number and date of birth are optional. The site says they help it match your request and are used only to process the opt-out.
- Expect prescreened offers to taper off, not stop overnight. Mail already printed will still arrive.
What it stops
Prescreened offers: the “pre-approved” and “you’ve been selected” credit card and insurance mail that lenders and insurers send using lists from the credit bureaus.
What it doesn’t stop
- Offers from companies you already use. Your own bank or insurer can still mail you. Ask each one directly.
- Catalogs, coupons and other ads. Those need DMAchoice and our store-by-store guides.
- Mail for someone who moved out. That takes a different fix. Here’s how.
Why it asks for your Social Security number
To find the right credit file. The FTC says sharing your Social Security number and date of birth is optional, though the site says including them helps it process your request. If you leave them out, give your name and address exactly as they appear on your offers.
How to tell you’re on the real site
- The address is optoutprescreen.com, typed by you, not reached from a link in an email or text.
- It asks for your name and address, and optionally your Social Security number and date of birth. Anything asking for a card number or bank account isn’t it.
- If anything else asks you to pay or “verify” to stop credit offers, close it.
Good to know
- You can still apply for credit or insurance whenever you like. Opting out only stops the offers you didn’t ask for.
