How to stop holiday catalogs before they start

Holiday catalogs are planned and printed weeks ahead, so the best time to ask a company to stop is now. Do two broad opt-outs, then ask each store you’ve bought from.

The quick answer

  1. Stop prescreened credit and insurance offers at OptOutPrescreen.com, the credit bureaus’ official site. Our walkthrough →
  2. For companies you’ve never bought from, choose which mail you get at DMAchoice. Its FAQ says to allow 90 days.
  3. For stores you’ve bought from, ask each one directly. DMAchoice says it can’t do that part. Company guides are below.

Store-by-store guides

  • Lands’ End: one email. It says to allow 2–4 weeks.
  • J.Crew: one email, which also covers J.Crew Factory and Madewell.
  • Crate & Barrel: a short web form. CB2 has its own.
  • Harry & David: an online privacy form. Choose Direct Mail.
  • Kohl’s: a short letter to a PO Box.
  • L.L.Bean: account settings or a letter.

Other mailers worth stopping now

What to expect

  • Anything already printed or mailed will still arrive.
  • Timelines vary: 2–4 weeks for Lands’ End, several weeks for Valpak, up to 60 days for Spectrum. Many companies give none.
  • If a catalog still shows up about 12 weeks after you asked, send the request again.
  • Stopping marketing mail doesn’t stop bills or account notices.
Good to know
  • Ask in your own name and keep a copy or screenshot. Some companies, including L.L.Bean, say they don’t accept requests from third-party opt-out services.
  • Like a catalog? Keep it. Stop the ones you never open.
